A personal trainer is a fitness professional who helps teach, coach, advise and support you on your journey towards better health.  The following article will help explain the steps involved when you hire a personal trainer.

  1. All training will begin with a consultation.  This is to identify any medical conditions and/or risk factors that affect your ability to exercise safely.  We will also discuss medications, previous injuries, surgeries and any current aches and pains.  Based on any risk factors, a physician's approval to exercise may be required before we can begin an exercise program.
  2. We will then discuss your goals.  This will help us develop a program that maximizes your results for each workout, thus reaching your goals as quickly as possible.
  3. Working together, we will create a program that fits your time schedule and lifestyle.  Your program should include aerobic activity (walking, cycling, etc.), strength and flexibility training.  We won't necessarily do all of those at each session, but they will be taught.
  4. The actual exercise sessions can be at your home or another site.  Home exercise equipment would be discussed at the consultation.  Sessions can be as long or as short as your schedule requires.  I will guide you through each exercise to ensure proper intensity and technique. Future sessions will reinforce your confidence and knowledge of the exercises.  The more sessions you purchase the more exercises and variety I will introduce into your program.  Eventually, you will be able to create and follow your own programs.

Physical activity can greatly increase your quality of life.  Those who are active on a regular basis are healthier and generally lead longer lives than sedentary individuals.  As little as 30 minutes a day of brisk walking (or the equivalent) can lead to lower blood pressure, decreased risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.  Regular exercise also helps lower cholesterol levels, control blood sugar and build strong bones.

Wouldn't it be great to play with your kids or grandkids for an afternoon without getting tired?  Or carry the groceries in without feeling winded?  Maybe you'd like to hike, ski, cycle, or climb on your next vacation!  All these activities will be safer and easier if you are phsysically prepared for the challenges of your life!
